Do You Know Why Your Sleep Journal Is Important?


My good friend Mary McManus aka @gracefullady on Twitter where we met, was talking to me about how important it is for her to get sleep and rest.

Did you know she is a polio and post polio survivor, and a finisher in the Boston Marathon?

Fatigue is the number one symptom which she has to manage. She decided to keep a journal of her fatigue symptoms, ( I Highly recommend you do the same) to see if there was any correlation between the sleep and rest she was getting and the symptoms of fatigue.

Now while this may seem like a no brainer, many people do not pay attention to how they feel throughout the day. It is easy for the ‘tail to wag the dog’. People feel cranky, irritable, fatigued and so they reach for caffeine or chocolate or a quick fix never bothering to take the time to examine the root cause of feeling this way.

Mary began to notice that when she rested when her body said to stop, or took a quick power nap to refresh and when she slept well and for the number of hours she required, she did in fact have more energy throughout the day. She also noticed through keeping her journal that saying yes to a breakfast meeting and having to get up at 5:30 am even for one day, required a week of recovery time.

So she has decided to avoid early morning meetings and flights whenever possible.

She would not have this insight without keeping a journal and determining what her body needs to function at its optimal best.

Substanial Weight Gain From Too Little Sleep


I just came across this short, but informative article from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and wanted to share the information with you.

Did you know that regularly running short on sleep can easily make a child increase weight? Researchers found that in a look at data from the National Institutes of Health.

Julie Lumeng of the University of Michigan compared the amount of sleep kids got in the third grade with their weight in the sixth grade. Her study was in the journal Pediatrics.

“Children who were getting less sleep in the third grade were more likely to be overweight three years later in sixth grade, compared to the children who were getting more sleep.’”

Lumeng says that, for each added hour of sleep, the risk of overweight later falls about 40 percent. It’s another reason for kids to get enough sleep. And, Lumeng says, no TV in the bedroom – it makes it harder for the kid to go to sleep.

Insomnia Inside Canada


I recently completed analyzing a piece that promotes that not getting enough sleep is costing the Canadian economy 20 BILLION DOLLARS, YES 20 BILLION DOLLARS per year!

We have found one of their clarification on lack of slumber.

Do You Know What Sets Your Body’s Clock


The human body is governed by an internal clock known as the circadian rhythm. In each 24-hour cycle, it makes you want to sleep when it’s dark and be awake when it’s light. It causes periods of sleepiness between midnight and 6 a.m. — the  natural time for humans to sleep — then again in the midafternoon.

But as a shift worker, you have to try to sleep when your body is telling you to be awake, and be awake during those dips in your alertness level when your body is telling you to sleep. And as you get sleepier, you begin to miss things you would normally respond to, resulting in careless and even dangerous errors. Additionally, sleeping during the day can make it difficult to get the amount of sleep your body needs. Some research shows shift workers average five hours of sleep per day, at least one to one-and-a-half hours less than non-shift workers.

Regularly getting less than seven or eight hours of sleep in a 24-hour period really can lead to chronic problem sleepiness and cause irritability, crankiness and depression. It also makes it more likely that you might fall asleep while driving. And the only way to correct the problem is to get more or better sleep.

Whether you work a regular day shift, or the night shift, you can see the need for sleep.

Can Drowsy Driving Lead To Accidents?


Perhaps one of the most dangerous consequences associated with shift work is sleepiness behind the wheel. The late night and early morning drive times are the most hazardous, with the majority of crashes occurring between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. when the body naturally experiences sleepiness. This contributes to the high rate of serious injuries and fatalities for several reasons:

Crashes involving drivers who fall asleep occur more often on highways and roadways where speed limits are higher.
The driver’s eyes are closed so there is no attempt to avoid the crash.
The driver is usually alone in the vehicle so there’s no one to alert the driver to danger.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that more than 100,000 crashes each year are the result of drowsy driving. Some studies have proven that roughly one-quarter of shift workers report having at least one crash or close call within the last year.

In fact, research shows that drivers are just as impaired when they’re sleepy as when they’ve consumed alcohol.

Do You Know The Formula For Waking Up Refreshed And Rejuvenated?


Trapper,

Just a quick note about your Sleep Audio.

As someone that has no problem getting into REM
in 4 minutes or less it was a bit of a challenge as to
how best to use your product.

What I came up with was this.
I used them for afternoon meditation/relax time.

As a way to regenerate quickly to boost my energy in the afternoon.
And for that, they worked great. I just settled in and played
the subliminal one on loop. After coming out of it found
I had a refreshed look to the rest of the day.

For the most part I’m up at 5 or 6 every day
and have the bulk of what I want to get done
finished by noon. So having to go through the rest
of the day sometimes needs a bit more than just a coffee.

Thanks for these. It definitely puts a different spin to my day,
though I don’t need them everyday it’s nice to know that if
I need that quick recharge, they’re here.
