			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Why You Should Never Ignore Insomnia</p>
<p>First, you should never think that insomnia is acceptable and write it off in any way at all. In fact, insomnia can actually be a sign of bigger problems. Insomnia may not be a disease so to speak but it is a condition that can be treated. One of the biggest problems is that most people do not ever discuss their insomnia problems with their doctor; therefore they can never be resolved.</p>
<p>So many times, people think that insomnia is a temporary condition that will go away on its own but it never does, it just gets worse. You could be suffering from anxiety, panic, or depression and may not even be aware of it yet. The doctor will figure this out and can give you something to make you feel better which will likely leads to you gaining back your sleep.</p>
<p>Insomnia should not be ignored for many reasons. Perhaps it is your medication that is causing this insomnia, or maybe you have a medical condition that has yet to be diagnosed, or maybe you have an emotional condition that you are unaware of. Whatever the reason you can be certain of one thing and that is that there definitely is a reason. Insomnia, especially chronic insomnia is your body&#8217;s way of letting you know that something is not right.</p>
<p>If you were to decide to ignore insomnia, eventually your physical health would deteriorate; your mental health would as well. Your performance at work and basically in all that you do will lack the vigor that it once had and you will become irritable and moody with loved ones. This is your body&#8217;s way of handling what insomnia is dishing out. One of the major ways for people to remain healthy is to get plenty of rest and eat a well balanced diet so when you are only averaging a couple of hours at best, of sleep per night you will soon feel like you have been hit by a truck. Your mind may even go into a delirious state and your wick will be very short.</p>
<p>Take the time to go and see your doctor so he can find out what is causing the insomnia, at the very least he will be able to provide you with some medication to help you get some rest. (I&#8217;m still not a fan of meds, but only go this route if used under strict supervision of your Doctor and only for a temporary time.)</p>
<p>This will help you get some rest but there is no insomnia medicine that can be taken indefinitely so you will have to work in a proactive manner to work with doctors and such to develop a new plan for when the medication period is over. The bottom line is that you do not want to become dependent on anything to fall into a good night&#8217;s sleep.</p>

<p>Well, it&#8217;s been about ten days here in the states now.</p>
<p>Is Daylight Savings Time still affecting your <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">sleep</a>?</p>
<p>This year was a piece of cake for me. Perhaps it was because I worked that day then took a couple hour road trip to visit some friends and take in a show at Kentucky Dam Village. By the time I arrived back home at midnight after a two hour drive, nothing was going to keep me from sleep!</p>

Just a quick reminder that Daylight Savings Time; (In the USA) ends Sunday morning November 7</span><sup><span style="font-size: medium;">th</span></sup><span style="font-size: medium;"> 2010 at 2:00am</p>
<p>So, why do we even have DST, and how can it affect you?</p>
<p>You see, during the &#8220;energy crisis&#8221; years, Congress enacted earlier starting dates for daylight time. In 1974, daylight time began on the 6</span><sup><span style="font-size: medium;">th</span></sup><span style="font-size: medium;"> of January and in 1975 it began on  the 23</span><sup><span style="font-size: medium;">rd</span></sup><span style="font-size: medium;"> of February. After those two years the starting date reverted back to the last Sunday in April.</p>
<p>In 1986, a law was passed that shifted the starting date of daylight time to the first Sunday in April, beginning in 1987. The ending date of daylight time was not subject to such changes, and remained the last Sunday in October.</p>
<p>The Energy Policy Act of 2005 changed both the starting and ending dates. Beginning in 2007, daylight time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.</p>
<p>Daylight savings time can affect the sleep patterns of millions of people annually.</p>
<p>Sleep deprivation, sleep loss, and the onset of insomnia are just a few of the affects.</p>
<p>Remember, It is not normal for a person to be sleepy at times when he or she expects to be awake.</p>
<p>So what can be done about this change in our sleep schedule do to the time change?</p>
<p>I recommend a sleep routine.</p>
<p>A sleep routine is a routine that you set up prior to going to bed to get your body, and mind ready to fall asleep. If you start doing this </span><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>PRIOR</strong></span><span style="font-size: medium;"> to the daylight savings time, you just might save yourself not only a lot of grief, but a minimum of five to seven nights of tossing and turning do to the time change.</p>
<p>Ok, here&#8217;s what I recommend.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s say your time you usually go to bed is 11:00pm.</p>
<p>I suggest at 10:15 to 10:30pm or (at least 45 minutes prior to the bedtime you have set for yourself) you start winding down. This means turning off the TV, computer; (Yes even facebook, sleep is more important) and start listening to some soothing music. (We have a track of music dedicated just for this on our </span><a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Sleep Secret Audio</strong></span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">.)</p>
<p>What this will do is start letting your mind, and body know that it is time to relax.</p>
<p>From here I suggest that at 11:00pm (or whatever bed time yours is) as you get comfortable in your bed, you insert your earbuds, or put on your headphones or maybe you have an mp3 player close to your bed. <p>For those folks in the USA coming off your Labor day weekend, I hope it was enjoyable.</p>
<p>I do have a question; if you traveled this past weekend or if you travel on a regular basis, how did you <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">sleep</a>?</p>
<p>Did family and friends unconsciously slip some bad sleeping ideas into your head?</p>
<p>You know like, &#8220;Oh, you traveled through a couple of time zones, your sleep will be off.&#8221;  Or how about, &#8220;You won&#8217;t sleep well in a hotel.&#8221; Or something along those lines.</p>
<p>Well, I recently did some traveling, through a couple of times zones, and stayed in a hotel in a strange city. Everything that should lead up to nights of <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">insomnia</a>, or sleep loss.</p>
<p>But it didn&#8217;t.</p>

For those folks in the USA coming off your Labor day weekend, I hope it was enjoyable.

I do have a question; if you traveled this past weekend or if you travel on a regular basis, how did you sleep?

Did family and friends unconsciously slip some bad sleeping ideas into your head?

You know like, "Oh, you traveled through a couple of time zones, your sleep will be off."  Or how about, "You won't sleep well in a hotel." Or something along those lines.

Well, I recently did some traveling, through a couple of times zones, and stayed in a hotel in a strange city. Everything that should lead up to nights of insomnia, or sleep loss.

But it didn't.

I slept great!

<p>Welcome to day four of <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">Sleep Awareness Week</a>!</p>
<p><strong>Keep the Clock Out of Sight</strong>: If you can, try to keep your clock out of sight. Set your alarm and then put it somewhere else or turn it away from you &#8211; out of your general view. For instance, instead of having the clock on the nightstand, put it on the dresser in the far corner.</p>
<p>If a clock is visible, you may find yourself staring at it or waking up periodically to look at it. If you’re making an effort to create a good sleep environment, it means that you’re aware of an impairment.</p>
<p>If you’re trying to break the cycle of <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">sleeplessness</a>, then it’s important that you don’t focus on time. Seeing how early it is or how little time has passed, can only lead to frustration.</p>
<p><strong>FYI&#8230;</strong> I don&#8217;t even have a clock in my bedroom anymore, and since &#8220;Throwing it out&#8221; a couple of years ago, I get a much better night&#8217;s <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">sleep</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Sleep Habit: No Napping! </strong>Just as eating in between meals ruins your appetite, napping between deep sleep can prevent many sleep disorder sufferers from being able to fall asleep and get a full night’s rest.</p>
<p>For some, a nap is just the medicine they need to re-energize for the day, but if you’re suffering from <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">sleep deprivation</a>, a nap may cause more harm than good.  Even though in the beginning you may feel extremely sleepy, try to save your slumber for the middle of the night and not for a mid-day luxury.</p>

<p>Sleep Awareness Week starts this week, and also, I wanted to make you aware that we change clocks to Daylights Saving Time, Saturday March 20th 2010.</p>
<p>Please book mark this page and return often not only this week, but throughout the year as we always have some type of <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">sleep</a> issue that we cover.</p>
<p>This week we will focus on some &#8220;How To Tips.&#8221;</p>
<p>Anything from the essentials to getting a good night&#8217;s sleep, to also good sleeping habits, to clearing <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">insomnia</a> from your life.</p>
<p>Remember, not every sleep tip we mention will work for everyone.  The solution is to find what works, and maybe a combination of a few, works for you.  Sometimes you may have to make lifestyle changes, try to keep a <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">sleep</a> journal,(as mentioned in a previous post here), and seek out help from your doctor if signs and symptoms worsen.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>My good friend Mary McManus aka @gracefullady on Twitter where we met, was  talking to me about how important it is for her to get <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com " target="_blank">sleep</a> and rest.</p>
<p>Did you know she is a  polio and post polio survivor, and a finisher in the Boston Marathon?</p>
<p>Fatigue is the number one symptom which she has  to manage. She decided to keep a journal of her fatigue symptoms, ( I Highly recommend you do the same) to see if there  was any correlation between the <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com " target="_blank">sleep</a> and rest she was getting and the symptoms  of fatigue.</p>
<p>Now while this may seem like a no brainer, many people do not pay  attention to how they feel throughout the day. It is easy for the &#8216;tail to wag  the dog&#8217;. People feel cranky, irritable, fatigued and so they reach for caffeine  or chocolate or a quick fix never bothering to take the time to examine the root  cause of feeling this way.</p>
<p>Mary began to notice that when she rested when her  body said to stop, or took a quick power nap to refresh and when she slept well and  for the number of hours she required, she did in fact have more energy  throughout the day. She also noticed through keeping her journal that saying yes  to a breakfast meeting and having to get up at 5:30 am even for one day,  required a week of recovery time.</p>
<p>So she has decided to avoid early morning  meetings and flights whenever possible.</p>
<p>She would not have this insight without  keeping a journal and determining what her body needs to function at its optimal  best.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I just came across this short, but informative article from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and wanted to share the information with you.</p>
<p>Did you know that regularly running short on <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">sleep</a> can easily make a child increase weight? Researchers found that in a look at data from the National Institutes of Health.</p>
<p>Julie Lumeng of the University of Michigan compared the amount of sleep kids got in the third grade with their weight in the sixth grade. Her study was in the journal Pediatrics.</p>
<p>&#8220;Children who were getting less sleep in the third grade were more likely to be overweight three years later in sixth grade, compared to the children who were getting more sleep.’&#8221;</p>
<p>Lumeng says that, for each added hour of <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">sleep</a>, the risk of overweight later falls about 40 percent. It’s another reason for kids to get enough sleep. And, Lumeng says, no TV in the bedroom – it makes it harder for the kid to go to sleep.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="color: #000000;">Although changes in the circadian timing system are thought to be a major factor in the decline of <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">sleep</a> quality that often accompanies aging, few reports have actually examined this relationship in detail. Because some treatments for age-related <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">insomnia</a> are based on putative circadian changes, it is important to expand the limited database that specifically addresses this issue. This study examined age-related changes in sleep, and relationships between those sleep changes and alterations in the circadian timing system, in a group of middle-aged and older subjects.</p>
<p>Sixty healthy men and women between the ages of 40 and 84 were studied. A subset of older subjects (&lt; 65 years) had reported sleep disturbance for at least 1 year before participation. Polysomnography was obtained, and body core temperature was recorded continuously for 24 hours. All recordings took place in the Laboratory of Human Chronobiology, Department of Psychiatry, Cornell University Medical College.</p>
<p>There were no differences in sleep quality between middle-aged and non-sleep-disturbed older subjects. However, timing of the minimum body temperature was earlier in the older non-sleep-disturbed subjects than in the middle-aged group. In contrast, sleep-disturbed older people had shorter total sleep times, reduced sleep efficiency, more waking time after sleep onset, and a reduced proportion of <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www.sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">REM sleep</a> compared with non-sleep-disturbed older subjects. Yet, there were no differences between the two older groups in the rhythm of body temperature. For the entire group, age was correlated negatively with total sleep time, sleep efficiency, percentage of stage 2 sleep, and the timing of the temperature minimum.</p>
<p>The results support the widely held notion that sleep and <a title="Sleep Secret Audio" href="http://www,sleepsecretaudio.com" target="_blank">circadian rhythm</a> changes occur with aging. However, the hypothesis that age-related changes in sleep may be associated with aging of the circadian system was supported only to a limited degree, suggesting that age-related sleep disturbance is likely to have multiple causes. Thus, treatment strategies that incorporate a combination of interventions may be the most effective.</span></p>
