What Can Breathing Do For Your Sleep?

One of the reasons that we are alive is because we breathe.  Most people tend to overlook breathing for one reason or another, mostly because it is something that we do without really thinking about it.  If we are suffering in some way or another in our life, however, we might be surprised to learn that breathing can actually help us in many different ways.  Not that simple every day in and out breathing that we do by instinct but slow and deliberate breathing that helps to give our body some of the things that we need.

One of the things that deep breathing exercise can bring to us is help if we are dealing with sleeping disorders.  Although it may only be one piece of the puzzle that we need in order to overcome these problems, it certainly is one that we should practice on a regular basis.  Deep breathing calms the mind and helps to bring oxygen to parts of the body that may be deprived of it.  It also helps to put us in a more relaxed state which can certainly go a long way in helping us to sleep better.

Unfortunately, most of us breathe incorrectly because we are breathing shallow instead of breathing deeply.  Whenever you are at rest and breathing normally, look at your stomach.  If it is going in and out, this is showing you that your diaphragm is working and you are breathing deeply.  If you tend to take your breath in shallow bursts, you are not really giving your body the oxygen that it needs.

Deep breathing exercises should be a part of your evening ritual if you have insomnia.  Go into a quiet part of your home and spend a little bit of time deeply breathing through your nose and slowly exhaling through your mouth.  Try  to concentrate on every breath that you take and push every stressful thought out of your mind.  It may take a little bit of time for you to get used to doing this but eventually, you will find that you are able to put yourself into a relaxed state.

Continue breathing deeply but don’t over exaggerate it as this may actually stimulate your mind to action.  Allow your mind to focus on positive thoughts and serene images while you are breathing.  Not only is this going to help you to fall asleep faster, you may find that you wake up less frequently as well.

Sincerely,

Don’t Stress Over Insomnia

One of the most frustrating things that we can go through is not being able to sleep properly at night.  If you are finding that you are tossing and turning during the night and if you can’t keep your mind off of stressful situations, it can not only affect your hours during the nighttime, it can affect the entire day.  Although there are a lot of different things that can cause insomnia, one of the more common reasons why we experience it is because of stressful situations we are going through.

There are really two different types of sleeping problems that people with stress tend to go through.  For some, they are unable to fall asleep when they lay down and they may find themselves tossing and turning, their minds dwelling on things that keep them awake.  There are also others who tend to fall asleep quickly but that sleep is soon interrupted and once they are awake, they can’t seem to fall back asleep again.  If stress is robbing you of the sleep that you need, there are a few things that you may be able to do to help cure it.

One of the best things that you can do in this situation is to prepare your mind to put the stressful situations on the back burner.  For at least one hour before you go to bed, avoid anything that would remind you of the stressful problems that you are going through.  Practice meditating on things that are upbuilding and do some deep breathing exercises to help calm your mind as well.  During times like these, things like warm baths, aromatherapy and soft music also help to calm a weary mind.

You should also make sure that your body is not lacking anything that it needs.  If you are dealing with panic attacks and these are robbing you of sleep, you might be short on some vitamins.  Supplement with a good multivitamin and make sure that you are getting enough B vitamins during the day.  Although this may not totally take your stress away because it does not change the environment around you, if you find that you are panicking about nothing then this may just be the culprit.

Calming your mind and getting the sleep that you need if you’re dealing with too much stress can certainly be a difficult thing to do.  With a little bit of patience, however, you can gain some control over your thoughts and allow yourself to get the sleep that you need.

Take A Holiday From Insomnia

Greetings,

Did you know that in some cases, insomnia could be triggered by a particular event or incident? This may vary from losing someone you love to working on a project at work. If you are able to identify that this is indeed the case, then there is one more idea that might help to relieve your insomnia.

Take a holiday or two or make plans for a long getaway. When planning this, you must remember that you are doing this for yourself so you can relieve your insomnia and get back to your regular sleep pattern, so do it for yourself.

Pick a destination that is quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you already know of a cabin in the hills or a beach house that
you can go to, then this is the best time to pay a visit. Make sure your traveling does not include crowded roads or busy trains, because that is
definitely not going to help. You must ensure that this trip involves a minimum of stress.

Ideally, beach areas or island destinations are best as they offer you the opportunity take long walks alongside scenic views. You would need to escape the crowd, so pick a time when the place is not so crowded. Seasons to avoid would be school holidays, public holidays or even
festive seasons. If you have just lost someone you loved, festive seasons are going to create way too many painful emotions that are
definitely going to keep you awake at night, so don’t even consider it!

Your holiday should be well-planned so that there are no hiccups that will give you additional stress. Go to a travel agent that will help you
with everything from arrival and departure transfers to your hotel rooms.

If you are selecting a resort, go for something that doesn’t have connecting rooms. Go for chalet style accommodation that is a sufficient
distance from eating outlets or recreation places in the resort because this will give you the privacy you need to relax and sleep minus noisy
hotel neighbors.

Acupuncture For Deep Sleep

There are a lot of different things that we can do in order to help us to sleep at night.  There may be times, however, whenever we need to seek some professional help because we are simply unable to relax enough to drift off to sleep.  If it is necessary for us to do this, it would be better if we stuck with some kind of a natural medicine instead of going with a pharmaceutical cure.  One way for you to be able to do this is to try acupuncture.

Although many of us consider the art of acupuncture to be somewhat new, the fact of the matter is that it has been practiced by the Chinese for thousands of years.  The ancient Chinese were always very interested in natural health.  As a matter of fact, they were often reported to be looking for an elixir to be able to live forever.  As a result of the search, we have a lot of methods of natural healing that we may not have been familiar with otherwise.

Many people are nervous whenever they first go into the acupuncturist in order to have him treat them for insomnia.  The fact of the matter is, you don’t need to be nervous about anything at all.  More than likely, your first visit is going to be a one-on-one meeting with the acupuncturist.  This will help to put your mind at ease and prepare you for him to be able to work with you.

The theory behind acupuncture, although it is rather complex when totally revealed, really has to do with applying certain types of pressure and puncturing with needles in areas that are going to affect different parts of the body.  The acupuncturist is going to know exactly what is necessary to do in order to remove what is blocking your ability to get the sleep that you need.

Not only will you be able to sleep better at night, you may actually find that the acupuncturist is able to do a number of different things that will help you.  For example, there are some acupuncture procedures which will help to curb your appetite.  Use them in conjunction with one another as much as possible.  Not only will you end up with a better overall sense of well-being, you may end up having a good night’s sleep after all.

Sincerely,

With the Economy Down, Sleeplessness Is Up

Almost a third of all Americans are tossing and turning, unable to get a good night’s sleep because they’re worrying about the economy, their jobs or their money, a new poll finds.

Money woes far outweigh other problems, such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, global warming, or the threat of a terrorist attack, according to the annual poll by the National Sleep Foundation.

“What is very telling is that these Americans whose sleep is impacted by financial worries report that their sleep disturbance makes them much less likely to work efficiently, exercise, eat healthily, and have sex compared to their better-sleeping fellow Americans,” said report co-author Michael V. Vitiello, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at University of Washington.

These sleep-disturbed Americans also report that they’re more than twice as likely to miss participating in family events, leisure activities and work functions because of their sleepiness, Vitiello added.

According to the poll, 27 percent of those surveyed said they had disturbed sleep in the past month due to money issues — including personal finances (16 percent), the U.S. economy (15 percent), or losing their job (10 percent).

Although people are getting better about recognizing the importance of sufficient sleep to their health and their ability to function, many are still experiencing disturbed sleep, leading to adverse effects on their health and daily functioning, Vitiello said.

“It is important for Americans to recognize that good sleep is not negotiable, rather it is a pillar of good health and function,” he said. “As times get tougher, it actually becomes more important than ever to do what one can to maintain good sleep quality, as poor sleep has such an immediate impact on daily function and longer-term impact on physical health.”

The number of Americans reporting sleep problems has increased 13 percent since 2001. Conversely, the number of people who report getting eight hours of sleep on a regular basis has decreased, from 38 percent in 2001 to 28 percent today. Also, only a third of all Americans who report sleep problems also report that they’ve discussed their sleep problems with their doctor, Vitiello said.

“Given the ongoing economic crisis and personal financial stresses many Americans are experiencing, the National Sleep Foundation encourages Americans to maintain or to develop good sleep, exercise and diet habits to stay healthy and productive, particularly in difficult times,” Vitiello said. “Remember that good sleep is essential to good health and is not negotiable. If you think you have a sleep problem you should speak with your physician.”

Dr. Bruce Nolan, medical director of the Sleep Center at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, said sleep is sensitive to things that go on during the day.

“Things that go on during the day can disturb people’s nights, and things that go on at night can disturb people during the day,” Nolan said.

People should try to get seven hours or more sleep a night, Nolan said. If you have problems sleeping, you should seek medical help.

“Most sleep specialists feel if the problem be handled without sleeping medications, that’s the first choice,” he said. “If it cannot be handled without medication, then the choice is therapy and medication to address the issue that is disturbing the sleep.”

The U.S. National Institutes of Health estimates that some 70 million Americans suffer from a chronic sleep disorder or intermittent sleep problem. Women experience the problems more often than men, and sleep difficulties increase with age.

Among other findings in the poll:

  • 46 percent said their sleep needs aren’t being met.
  • 35 percent said they sleep less than six hours a night.
  • 41 percent said they have driven while sleepy.
  • Almost on-third said that lack of sleep affected their work.
  • One-third said lack of sleep caused emotional problems, such as anxiety and depression.
  • 89 percent reported insomnia, 33 percent reported restless leg syndrome, and 14 percent reported sleep apnea

Three More Ways To Relax And Get Some Sleep

Most of us tend to equate relaxation with sleeping but the simple fact of the matter is that they are actually two totally separate things.  Although they may be interconnected in some way or another, sleeping is actually not relaxing.  It is a state of semi-unconsciousness that we achieve on a daily basis in order for our bodies to rejuvenate themselves and for our minds to do the same.  It is during this time that much of the information that we take in during the day is sorted and filed for later use.  Our bodies also go into a type of regeneration during this time and it is when we tend to grow the most.

Unfortunately, far too many of us tend to have a difficult time getting to sleep and even if we do fall asleep, we may wake up frequently.  If you would like to be able to get a great night sleep on a consistent basis, you need to learn how to relax first and then to fall asleep after that.  Here are three different ways that you can relax in order to prepare your body and mind for the sleep that you have been needing.

One of the easiest ways for you to relax is to make sure that you are not stimulating your mind unintentionally.  This is often done through a thinking pattern that comes about as a result of reading or meditating on something that is thought-provoking.  It may also come about, however, as a result of a television show we are watching or perhaps a movie.  Meditating on relaxing things will put our minds and bodies in a position where sleep will come naturally.

The second thing that you need to do is to get rid of any alcohol that you have been drinking at night.  Many of us think that we are helping our body to sleep if we are drinking alcohol but the fact of the matter is, the opposite may be true.  If we drink until we pass out, we may not be allowing our bodies to get the deep sleep that it needs and to stay asleep through the night.

Finally, we need to make sure that our environment is conducive to relaxation.  It would do us no good to sit down and meditate or to do some deep breathing exercises if the television set is going to be blaring in the background.  Make sure that the rest of your environment is set up to help you to achieve your goals.

Sincerely,
